About Brittney Knight
Your Certified Nutrition Coach, Personal Trainer, and Pilates Instructor in Hennepin County, MN
Hello and welcome to BK’s Fitness & Nutrition Coaching! My name is Brittney Knight but most call me BK. I graduated with a degree in Exercise Science: Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and a minor in Nutrition. I also have certifications in nutrition coaching, personal training, and Pilates. I love working with active people who want to feel and look their best without giving up their favorite foods.
From Athlete to Personal Trainer
Throughout my life, I have always maintained an active lifestyle. Growing up, I was a gymnast. Then, when I entered high school, I added Lacrosse into the mix. I continued playing Lacrosse in college and then added Rugby! I began adding strength training to my sports career in high school and continued in college as well. I was so afraid of gaining the freshman 15 I made sure it was a priority. Throughout my high school years, I was always so self-conscious. I hated being in a leotard without shorts (competition days), I was always comparing myself to the other gymnasts, and always felt like a bigger gymnast. Going into college, I was so determined not to gain weight. I worked out 5-6 days a week, slowly learning what to do in the gym by copying what some guys did. I realized nursing wasn’t what I wanted to do anymore. I didn’t want to only help people feel better, I wanted to help people get better, and live healthier lives. But throughout my college years I still found myself unhappy with my body, but becoming a little more confident with the strength I had gained.
I switched my degree to Exercise Science: Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation with a Nutrition minor. After college, I landed a job at Life Time Fitness. At this point, I was still actively playing rugby back in the cities, but now I worked at a gym so I was able to work out every day. But over the next year I began stressing over building my business and my exercise regimen switched to more CrossFit workouts, along with strength training and a cardio program. My goal was to become the most fit, strong, confident person I could become. Without even realizing it, I wasn’t fueling myself enough for all that I was doing. I gained 15 lbs. in that year and that wasn’t just muscle. I was the heaviest I had been, felt the most uncomfortable, and had to buy a size up in pants for the first time since I could remember. I had no idea where I was going wrong. I even restricted myself from eating out, having some of my favorite foods, and stayed away from certain fatty foods and carb-heavy foods.
From Hiring a Nutrition Coach to Becoming One
So, I hired my own nutrition coach. Through working with him I learned even more about my body, about fueling for workouts, and day-to-day life, how much food the body actually needs compared to what we always hear. And the best thing was learning how to properly reverse diet. I went from eating 1,800 calories a day to 2,800-3,000 calories a day in 4-5 months. In that time, I also lost 12 lbs. of body fat and was hitting PRs almost weekly. I didn’t even realize before that I had such low energy day-to-day, I wasn’t recovering well, my sleep was crap, all because my body wasn’t getting enough food.
From my education and experience with my own nutrition coach, I knew I needed to help others. I got one more certification and started coaching others to learn how to fuel their bodies and hit goals they never thought they could!
Every journey is different and has its own bumps along the road. After having my nutrition coach for a year, I thought I was ready to graduate. Then I got hit with my first surgery – hip labrum tear repair. Knowing this was a new experience, I kept my coach through the process to help me stay accountable, not gain extra weight and maintain as much muscle mass as I could. We successfully did that, then surgery number 2 came 9 months later. Shoulder labrum repair. Same scenario but still wanted my coach by my side. After a year had passed after both my surgeries, I was starting to feel stronger again, in a good routine, then surgery number 3 came. Donating bone marrow to a little girl. I knew I could do it on my own but still wanted accountability for the first steps after surgery till I could work out again.
